I am a mother of a son with Autism as well as a COTA (Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant). I have heard countless parents ask how they can make a weighted vest for their child. There just isn't a lot of good info out there, especially all in one place. With this pattern, I show you how to make a weighted vest, and also give you detailed instructions on how to weight it. I suggest using washers and padding them instead of bulky rice or poly beads. This is a less bulky and more comfortable way to add weight. A girl ruffle version and basic casual version are included. How can this vest help a child with Autism or Sensory Processing Disorder? Extra weight provides proprioceptive input to the joints. Proprioceptive input can affect the behavior of a child with sensory needs. Propioceptive input can calming to a child who is hyperactive and can be stimulating to a child who is lethargic. It can also help children pay attention better. Always use a weighted vest under the supervison of an Occupational Therapist.
